Microsoft is planning several new features and functionalities in SQL Server 2008 which will revolutionize the way we deal with data. These days it is not enough to think about data only in relational data terms. There is so much information available in various forms like Email Messages, Files, Folders, Geographical information etc. What we need today is to come up with something which can index, categorize and search these sources in their original forms instead of converting them in RDBMS tables and columns. SQL Server 2008 vision gives us hope for this type of platform. One of the best features which I love most in SQL Server 2008 is the native support of Spatial Data types along with set of built-in functions and algorithms to manipulate that data. Following are some salient features of SQL Server 2008:

  1. Store and consume any type of data from XML to Documents
  2. Spatial data types to create geographical data based applications
  3. Enhanced support of disconnected application which can synchronize their data as soon as they will connect to main data store.
  4. Business Intelligence enhancements with increased support of Office 2007 BI tools
  5. Enhanced Data Warehousing support
